Prior to Covid-19, there was already plenty of evidence that young people were suffering in their social and emotional wellbeing. And there is a continued decrease in happiness with life among 10-15 year olds. School culture, school community, school climate – this is a big part of the solution. 

Schools are all about relationships and interactions. The most successful schools work hard at, and invest in, their communities. These schools understand that trust, respect, modelling behaviours and giving agency all have an impact on the wellbeing of the learning community, as well as raising aspirations and attainment. Social-emotional learning can boost academic results by 11%

Promoting wellbeing through social-emotional learning can boost academic outcomes. An analysis of 213 SEL programmes by Public Health England found an 11% boost in results in standardised achievement tests, as reported in The Guardian this week in a piece about the focus of school ‘catch up’. More >
